Rug Care & Cleaning

Q1. What’s the best way to maintain my Carpet/Rug?

To maintain the beauty of handmade area rugs, we recommend the following: Vacuum frequently with a device that has an adjustable beater bar/brush, set to the highest setting. If spills occur, blot the liquid as soon as possible. The idea is to lift the soil or liquid, not push it into the pile of the area rug. When there is a noticeable spot or residue, apply a modest amount of carbonated water and blot the liquid. If a spot remains, use small amount of mild liquid soap; apply a modest amount of carbonated water and blot with a lifting motion. Repeat if needed. If a spot still remains, contact your local certified hand-made carpet cleaning and repair company. A note on bamboo silk: it is best to use a professional. However, in times when a quick response is needed, gently blot (do not scrub) the soiled area using a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb liquids from spills. Air dry; heat drying should be avoided.

Q2. Can I spot clean my Carpet/Rug?

We are happy to provide you some tips to spot clean your handmade rug. However, due to the uniqueness of our rugs and carpets, and the degree of expertise with which these spotting instructions may be used, Maison David Attia assumes no responsibility related to the use of this information. All responsibility rests with the user. Blot, never scrub, spots on a rug as scrubbing can damage the carpet’s nap. Test all spotting products in an inconspicuous area first and look for color change. If the color bleeds or you are unsure how to proceed, consult a professional. Remove as much of the spill as possible before adding spotting products. Work from the outer edges of a spot to the center. Never saturate a spotting area with a liquid. Only spot with small amounts of cleaning products. Drying small areas can be accomplished with a hair dryer with the heat setting off.

Design, Buying & Selling Tips

Q1. Do you have any design tips for choosing a Rug?

Keep in mind that the rug must fit the room, both in form and function. Consider how the room is used, how much traffic the area gets, and who will view it under what light. For high-traffic areas such as hallways and foyers, you may want a durable, patterned rug.

Select furniture that enhances the rug design or colors found in the rug. If you start with furniture, choose a rug to pick up the colors used in your furnishing patterns. Patterns can be mixed if they are coordinated by color. Elements of a rug design can be further incorporated into the overall design scheme. For example, if the rug is floral, add framed prints or flowers in similar colors.

Size up the room and the area you want to cover. The most common area rug sizes are 4'x6' and 6'x9' feet; these typically work well under a coffee table. An 8'x11' rug (or larger) can cover an entire room. Smaller area and scatter rugs can be ideal for adorning smaller spaces, such as a hearth, a bedside, or the area in front of a kitchen sink, with a splash of color and warmth.

A rug with a bold, overall design can be the focal point of a room with a chair and sofa in solid or subdued patterns.

Light rugs make a room look more spacious, while deeper colors lend coziness to a room.

Choose a rug that will perform well, with the right combination of density and fiber. The denser the pile (with closer tufts or stitches), the better your rug will wear. Natural materials, such as wool and cotton, are durable, soft, and easy to clean.

Watch out for fringe elements. If the rug you like has fringe, make sure it's sewn on well, and use the vacuum cleaner with care.

Remember to take a swatch of any fabrics you'd like to match with you when you shop for a rug, so you'll have a better idea of what will complement your existing décor.

Don't underestimate the value of an underlay. Not only will it absorb the impact of feet and noise, it will reduce wear and tear on the rug and make vacuuming easier.

When buying a rug, it pays to select a reputable dealer with a knowledgeable staff, wide selection, and a guarantee that the store will stand behind its merchandise.

Q2. Should I hire a professional interior designer?

Here are eight benefits suggested by Northwest Society of Interior Designers (NWSID):

  1. Every project, large or small, presents challenges, from living space and storage constraints to maximizing light. A knowledgeable designer will guide clients efficiently through the maze of design choices.
  2. Experienced designers know what works and what doesn’t, and can help you choose the products that make sense both aesthetically and practically. 3. Designers have access to local and national manufacturers and products that are unavailable to most consumers.
  3. Design is only as good as its execution. Seasoned designers know how to find and work with the most qualified contractors, tradespeople, and painters. They make sure price meets quality, and they can apply leverage to repair or replace items when necessary.
  4. Designers save you from countless hours of shopping time and will work on-site. We bring options to you.
  5. A designer helps allocate your design dollars effectively now and for future phases of your design project. Designers make sure workers follow the construction schedule, complete every detail, and finish the job to your delight.
  6. Designers serve as a neutral third party to link taste and style between partners and help them decide on a direction.
  7. A designer’s experience more than proves its value. All of our designers have risen to educational and professional standards, and are well-versed in navigating the many state and city codes, safety, or convenience issues.
